The Independent Living Team (ILT) can help you explore your options around Self-Directed Support (SDS) and give you the information and support you require to decide which option is right for you.

Once you’ve decided on an SDS option, ILT can help you every step of the way. We can assist with writing a support plan with your local authority, finding a care agency that’s right for you or employing your own Personal Assistants (PA). If you do choose to become a PA employer, ILT can also advise on the responsibilities you will have and support you to comply with them.

We can advise and support you, on an ongoing basis, with PA recruitment and management, writing contracts of employment and much more.

Cost of ILT support

There is no cost to you. ILT is funded by the four Lothian local authorities and the Scottish Government to provide independent advice and support around SDS to all disabled people, people with long-term conditions and older people.

ILT can assist with payroll enrolment for people employing Personal Assistants and opting to use LCiL’s payroll service If you are a Personal Assistant employer and want to use a different payroll service, support from the Independent Living Team to understand and meet your employer responsibilities is still available free of charge.

I would be totally unable to manage or maintain Mum’s care package without all the excellent support I get from LCiL. I am so grateful for everyone’s help. Without it, and the excellent all round care she gets (which you all helped me set up) I have no doubt Mum would be have been unable to maintain living in her own home.
