LCiL Volunteers
LCiL Volunteers are disabled people, carers, and people with long-term health conditions. The programme supports and enables them to build awareness and understanding of the Independent Living Movement and of LCiL as an organisation.
Since launching in 2013, the Volunteer Programme (formerly Champions) has grown and developed alongside LCiL. Their lived experience helps shape and strengthen the work we do across the organisation.
Volunteer Roles
The Volunteer Programme is made up of two key roles: Peer Facilitators and Community Ambassadors.
Peer Facilitators use their lived experience to support the development of peer support groups, helping to raise awareness and understanding of Self-Directed Support (SDS). They attend peer groups and workshops, where they share their knowledge and experiences to help strengthen group connections and build confidence around SDS.
Training for Peer Facilitators focuses on developing strong peer relationships and recognising the value of lived experience in creating meaningful, supportive group environments.

Community Ambassadors focus on outreach and advocacy, using their lived experience to represent LCiL and promote the values of the Independent Living Movement.
They work within the community to support disabled people, carers, and their rights to help raise awareness and understanding of key issues. Community Ambassadors also play an important role in promoting LCiL’s person-led values, the social model of disability, and the principles of independent living.
By sharing their knowledge and experiences, they help raise the profile of LCiL, its services, and the wider movement with stakeholders and the public.
LCiL Volunteers are available to share their lived experience at community events, trainings and, committees, across Edinburgh and the Lothians.
