Are you experienced with caring for disabled children?

Do you enjoy helping children to play and have fun, whilst also managing their behaviour and safety?

Can you use your initiative, whilst being patient, reliable and responsible?

If so, you might be the right person for a part-time Personal Assistant job for an 11 year old boy with Downs Syndrome & Autism, and sometimes with his lively 7 year old brother too.

We are looking for an energetic, enthusiastic and caring individual to assist with our boys. Our 11 year old son has Down’s Syndrome & Autism and attends a Special School. He has some speech, and also understands/ uses Makaton(Signalong) signs. Our other son has dyslexia and is in mainstream school.

We require someone experienced with children, to take our son(s) out and about when possible, or to engage in active games, playing music or facilitating board games and play at home. Activities enjoyed away from home include going to the park or the woods, swimming at the Commonwealth Pool, soft play, trampolining, Dynamic Earth, Portobello beach or The Yard.

The job will usually be on Saturday mornings. This will be 4 hours but there may be more hours available, particularly in the school holidays, and 2.5 hours on Tuesday afternoons, with occasional Friday afternoons for the right applicant. Overnights are also required, for suitable applicants.

Experience of working with children is essential, and experience working or caring for a child with learning disabilities is required. Knowledge of Makaton or Signalong is useful, but not essential.

The rate of pay is £9.77 per hour.

Applicants must have an up to date PVG, (or be willing to join the scheme at their own cost). References will be required ahead of a job offer.
