I am a warm, upbeat and personable 49 year old woman with a progressive attitude, and who is eager to make the most of life. I have a lively mind and many interests.
I live with a complex mix of physical health issues and a mental health condition. These cause me varying degrees of impairment from day to day. My daily capacity is never ‘normal’ but my level of impairment, and indeed incapacity, fluctuates.
I require some assistance to manage some aspects of my daily life in order to be able to thrive.
I am looking for someone who can assist me to live life to the full despite disability. You will mostly be working with me on Tuesdays to assist me with batch cooking and some light domestic tasks such as recycling and laundry.
Batch cooking will be our priority. We will work together to prepare several healthy dishes for my week ahead. This will typically be a soup, a main course such as veggie chilli or risotto, a batch of houmous and vegetable sticks, some healthy baked snacks, and a five minute fruit compote. Cooking and food preparation presents me with challenges because the actions involved can trigger my chronic pain, as can prolonged standing. Chronic fatigue is also an issue and I have to pace my activity carefully. You will undertake tasks such as washing and chopping vegetables, stirring pans on the hob, and blending soups and the ingredients required to make houmous. You will also assist me with clearing up afterwards, and help to take out rubbish and recycling.
The rate of pay is £9.46 per hour
The working hours: Tuesday from 11am till 1.00pm. Hours can be further negotiated during interview.
The ideal candidate will preferably have experience in mental health and physical disability, or at least have a willingness to learn. It is essential that candidates are open-minded, non-judgemental and able demonstrate both understanding and compassion.
You will be confident, personable, reliable and organised, with an ability to work on your own initiative once familiarised with my routines. A cheery disposition with a good sense of humour would be greatly valued.
You will enjoy cooking and food preparation. Excellent hygiene standards, kitchen cleanliness and reasonable kitchen and cooking skills are essential. An interest in vegetarian and vegan cooking would be advantageous, but is not vital.
There may also be occasions when you will be asked to cover my Friday P.A.’s hours and tasks, in the event of sickness or holiday. The Friday role is primarily that of an exercise ‘buddy’, supporting me to engage in and joining me in activities such as going for walks, swimming and, in the future, possibly a light game of badminton in a community centre close to my home. The P.A. will provide a safe presence for me to improve my fitness level, increase motivation and confidence. It’s possible that in the event of covering sickness or holiday, that this could be limited to that of a walking companion. A good level of fitness is essential.
Membership of the PG scheme is preferred.
The applicant must be a non-smoker.
The post will be offered subject to successful references.
