I am a warm, upbeat, personable, independent 51 year old woman with a progressive attitude, eager to make the most of life. I have a lively mind and many interests. I especially love the arts – I love to write, journal, knit, read, play the piano, sketch and sometimes paint. I really enjoy the cinema, theatre, galleries and live music.
I live with a complex mix of physical health issues and a mental health condition. These cause varying degrees of impairment and challenge from day to day. My level of capacity fluctuates accordingly. I require some assistance to manage some aspects of my daily life, in order to be able to thrive.
I’m looking for a second assistant to join my team, someone who will be willing to get to know me, understand my needs and build a strong working relationship with me.
You will be working with me for six hours per week, three hours each on Monday and Friday afternoons/evenings. Your role will involve batch cooking – helping to cook and prepare meals for my week ahead and clear up afterwards – and some light domestic tasks, such as picking up a few grocery items and helping with laundry. Cooking and food preparation present me with challenges because the actions involved trigger my chronic pain, as can prolonged standing or sitting. Chronic fatigue is also a factor and I have to pace my activity carefully.
You will also assist me to improve my level of fitness and to engage in activities in the community. This may involve tasks such as accompanying me on walks, playing an easy game of badminton with me in the local community centre, going swimming at a local leisure centre, visiting the local library, shops or galleries and attending appointments/events.
The ideal candidate will have a caring nature, experience in a Personal Assistant/Careworker role would be advantageous but is not mandatory. You will have knowledge of and experience in mental health and physical disability, or at least have a willingness to learn.
You will be confident, personable, reliable and organised, equally able to take instruction and to work on your own initiative, once familiarised with my routines.
You must be a keen cook, have excellent hygiene standards and excellent kitchen skills. The ability to work tidily, cleanly and efficiently is vital. An interest in vegetarian and vegan cooking is desirable. We will prepare several healthy dishes each week – for example: a batch of soup, a salad, a main course such as a vegetarian traybake, a batch of houmous and some muffins.
It is important that candidates have a genuine interest in health and fitness. You will also be a confident swimmer. I am looking to return to swimming after many years and to build confidence both at and in the pool. You will provide a safe and reassuring presence to assist me to do this, as well as providing a dependable presence to enable me to access other activities in the community.
Membership of the PVG scheme is required.
The applicant must be a non smoker.
